If you like Target, TJ Maxx, or HomeGoods, there’s a good chance you will love Marshalls. It’s a wonderful place, and one of the few stores where you can really get whatever you need! They have clothes, food, home appliances… You name it, Marshalls has got it.
There are certainly things you’ll want to go to Marshalls for, however there are also some things you’ll want to avoid. We’ve rounded up a few of those items so you know the next time you visit. To start:
1. Don’t buy: makeup
Of course, you could get lucky, but makeup at this store can be really hit or miss. This is because there’s no samples, so you just have to guess if the product will be good. Also, sometimes customers turn non-samples into samples… Ew!
2. Do buy: wallets and bags
Just like the designer clothes, Marshalls has some really great designer wallets and purses. They’re good quality so they’ll last forever — and they’re super cute!
3. Do buy: towels
Their prices are great and the quality is perfect. Plus, they usually have lots of colors and patterns to choose from.
4. Don’t buy: perfume and/or cologne
Like the makeup, there are no samples and everything is sealed. So you can go ahead and buy, but you’re risking buying something that smells horrendous!
5. Do buy: shower curtain liners
It may seem like a random item, but it makes sense. It’s super affordable. It’s a basic necessity that’s good quality.
6. Don’t buy: yoga mats
Apparently, the yoga mats at Marshalls aren’t the best quality. The price might seem right, but they end up being a bit thin and slippery. Of course, there might be a good one! Just make sure to do research on the brand before purchasing.
7. Do buy: clothing hangers
Marshalls offers the best prices for clothing hangers. You get a ton and they’re super cute and come in several different colors!
8. Don’t buy: bedding
Sadly, some of the sheets include synthetic fibers which aren’t the most comfortable. They have pretty patterns, but it’s best to opt for sheets with a high thread-count and breathable, long-lasting cotton.
9. Do buy: storage baskets
Marshalls has a huge collection of decorative storage baskets that not only store your things, but look really cute! And once again, at amazing prices.
10. Do buy: wall art
Marshalls is the place for wall art! Everything from inspiring quote to calming beach themes, you’re bound to find something that fits your personality and make you feel at home.
11. Do buy: dog beds
Going to pet stores for your dog beds can cost you a pretty penny, but Marshalls offers all kinds and sizes — large ones being under $40! Now that’s a steal.
12. Don’t buy: furniture
While there are some hidden gems, a lot of the furniture pieces are failed products. So be on the look out for weird little things, like unstable legs! Might not be the best investment.
13. Do buy: baby shower gifts
Marshalls is home of the baby-friendly gifts! Toys, clothes, you name it. There’s things that every parent will appreciate — and it’s really easy to exchange, too!
14. Do buy: other gifts!
Marshalls isn’t just for baby gifts, but gifts for people of all ages! Candles, clothes, accessories… You are guaranteed to find something for that one friend who’s impossible to shop for.
15. Don’t buy: hair products
]Like the makeup situation, a lot of the hair products kind of turn into samples. And they’re also pricey at Marshalls. So you’re not saving a ton of money AND you might be going home with a used product.
16. Do buy: stylish notebooks
One thing Marshalls is definitely not short on is aesthetically-pleasing notebooks. The store is chock full of pretty stationaries and paper supplies all at good prices, if you’re looking to get organized.
17. Don’t buy: cheap kitchen supplies
Try to stray away from the cheap kitchen supplies, like measuring cups. While it may be tempting, you will probably find they don’t work or aren’t that great and will end up buying new ones anyway.
18. Do buy: picture frames
These can be expensive at some stores, so this is definitely a great deal! And they also make great gifts.
19. Do buy: pillows
Marshalls has every type of pillow you can think of, with two-packs clocking in at around $20. A great deal!
20. Don’t buy: skin care
Much like the makeup and hair product situation, you might just end up buying a used tube of moisturizer or a serum that doesn’t sit well on your face. Best to stick to Sephora for that one!
21. Do buy: dog toys
Much like dog beds, dog toys are also a great item to purchase at Marshalls! They are sturdy and affordable — and there’s so many options.
22. Do buy: assorted gift supplies

Marshalls’ candle selection is huge! You can get candles of any size and any scent, and they’re usually cheaper than most stores.
25. Do buy: designer clothes
You can find a ton of incredible deals in their clothing aisles. Sure, you’ll have to dig, but you can find great pieces from Free People, Calvin Klein, Guess, and more.
