Man earns over 1M views showing how to turn a trash can into a “speed composter”
I shudder to think of what I've paid for soil over the years. This is so easy.

If you love gardening, then you probably know how amazing black gold is.

However, we all know that buying compost is expensive, and it’s because of valid reasons.

Compost is hard to make.

Chances are, if you’re a gardener, you’ve tried making one yourself, just like what The Millennial Gardener did.

In a YouTube video he uploaded a few months back, The Millennial Gardener shared an easy way for us to make black gold.

According to him, he used to do the same old process of creating compost, but he encountered so many problems.

Then he had an idea.

He acknowledged his skill in initiating compost but ultimately failed.

His compost would produce both seeds and weeds, rendering his hard work useless.

He needed a barrier.

Using a cheap trashcan, he was able to create a rapid composter, and here’s how.

First, you’ll need the following:

  • 1 32-gal or 121 L trash bin (He bought his for $24. 48 at Lowe’s)
  • Shovel
  • 2-inch saw bit
  • 7/8-inch or 2.2 cm drill bit
  • Grass clippings
  • Dried leaves and pine needles
  • Sod
  • Kitchen scraps

How does this work?

The trash can’s locking lid changes everything. According to The Millennial Gardener, there would be no critters going inside your compost.

No weeds would grow since it’s all dark inside and you don’t have to worry about having a pile in the middle of your yard.

The black trash bin’s color concentration would turn organic matter into black gold.

Let’s start converting.

The first thing that you need to do is prepare all the materials that you will need.

Then, choose a spot where you will put your rapid composter.

Once you have found the perfect spot, just dig some dirt where you will place your trash can.

We need to place the bin a few inches on the ground.

Turn your trash can upside down.

Using a 2-inch saw bit, drill 7 holes at the bottom of the bin.

After that, it’s time to put holes in the sides of your trash bin.

You can add four vertical holes around the trash bin.

This will enable some oxygen to enter.

Once everything is done, place the trash bin in the hole you dug up.

Secure it in place.

Now, it’s time to add the ingredients to your compost.

First, add the grass clippings. In the video, he used around 5 gallons of grass clippings.

Next, add the dried leaves and pine needles and followed by some sod, then the kitchen scraps.

Mix them really well.

If you notice that your sod is a bit dry, don’t hesitate to water your compost.

Replace the lid and secure it.

Don’t forget to monitor it regularly.

Monitor every few weeks and months. You can add more kitchen scraps and mix the compost with your hands.

In this case, after 64 days, The Millennial Gardener felt ecstatic as he saw the results.

It was rich and black, just like what a compost should look like.

He said that he would start another batch since he saw that his method was a success.

This is gardening genius at its finest.

Here are some tips from Gardener:

  • Don’t put too many holes at the bottom of the trash can, this would weaken the bin.
  • Don’t put big holes in the sides of the bin. We don’t want critters to enter.
  • Don’t forget to put holes in the bin. Without them, you’d end up with anaerobic composting.
