Having a safe home is important, especially if you have a family. So look for areas to improve safety, such as clearing walkways, softening corners, and securing rugs in your house.
Setting your home up for safety might seem like a chore, but luckily you can follow some simple tips to make your safer house safer quickly.
Clean Up Your Power Cords
Keep your power cords and electrical cables from tripping you up by placing them inside of a box or other container. Decorate the box to make it look like it is a natural part of your room’s decor. Attach cords and cables to furniture to keep it out of sight, or use cover such as area rugs.
Use an Old Book to Hide Valuables
Hide your valuables in an old book by cutting out the middle pages. You should also glue the pages to make the pages around the hidey-hole sturdier. Applying Mod Podge glue with a small brush is just one method to glue the pages. Make sure to leave about 1/8 of the pages at the front of the book uncut.
Use Wooden Dowels to Strengthen Doors and Windows
While you can lock most windows and doors, sometimes those locks can fail. Use a long, wooden dowel to make a window or sliding glass door more secure. A dowel around three-quarters to one inch in diameter works best. Also make sure that the dowel is long enough to properly secure the portal.
Easily Defrost Sidewalks and Steps
To keep the steps and walkways around your home ice free, mix 1 teaspoon of dish soap, 1 tablespoon of rubbing alcohol, and 1/2 gallon of warm or hot water. Pour the mixture over the icy path. The warm or hot water quickly melts the ice while the alcohol should keep the surface from refreezing.
Use Velcro Strips to Secure Rugs
To keep a small rug from slipping, attach Velcro to the outside edges of the rug. Next, attach strips to the floor underneath the rug. This secures the rug to the floor and keeps it from slipping. In addition, having the Velcro to the outside edge of the rugs keeps the edge of the rug from flipping up and tripping you.
Use Pool Noodles to Cushion Edges
Pool noodles make a great bumper for sharp edges on doors and other objects. Just cut a pool noodle in half and apply it to the edge in question. This method works great on tables and other sharp edges where a child might bump their head. You can even use pool noodles on the chains of your swing set.
Safely Hide Your House Key
Glue a pill bottle to the underside of a small rock, dig a hole to fit it into outside your front door, and place a spare house key inside. Then the next time you find yourself locked outside of the house, you have an easy way to get inside, while still keeping your key well hidden from intruders.
Use Command Hooks and Rubber Bands
Please SHARE this with your friends and family.
Secure doors better by using command hooks and rubber bands. First, attach one command hook to the door and another to an adjoining surface. Next, secure both together using a thick rubber band. This should keep any children out of dangerous areas, at least until they learn how to remove the rubber band.
