The Best Pillows of 2021: The definitive in-depth review of top-rated pillows

September 13th, 2021

Finding the right pillow can be downright exhausting. Our goal with this article is to help you take the guesswork out of finding the perfect pillow by putting popular styles to the test – in this study, we looked at 8 of the most popular pillows on the market available, and evaluated them to find the best.

For decades, I had been sleeping on whatever pillow I found at the department store when moving residences. I could never find the exact best pillow for me – some were too flat or too thick, too firm or too soft, too hot, or to rough. I took it upon myself to find the best pillow available on the market. It is worth it to note that I am a combination sleeper and I rotate between sleeping on my back, side, and stomach. I was looking for a pillow that would be great for a sleeper like me.

I started by going through a bunch of lists of the best pillows – I scoured Amazon and direct to consumer sites to come up with a list of 8 of the best pillows on the market for all sleepers.

Overall, the best pillow I slept on by far was the Dosaze Adjustable Pillow. I enjoy sleeping on the Dosaze Adjustable pillow in all three sleep positions thanks to the adjustability of the loft and the medium-soft firmness. I also found it significantly cooler than the other pillows that I tested. I highly recommend this pillow as my top pick, especially for side-sleepers or people who sleep in a combination of positions.

In depth review and comprehensive list:

1) Winner: The Dosaze Adjustable Pillow, $79.99

After all of our research and testing, we found that this pillow is hands down the best pillow available, the Crème de la Crème. We found that the premium memory foam the most durable and most comfortable – it provided the overall best balance of support and comfort. It is a bit more expensive, but it is well worth it because of the quality and durability.

This pillow is handmade in the USA and utilizes a proprietary open cell gel memory foam that promotes airflow to regulate your temperature and prevent overheating. I noticed that this pillow was noticeably cooler than other pillows.

Unlike other pillows, that use a hybrid of polyester fiber and memory foam, this pillow is 100% shredded memory foam, which to felt much more supportive to me than the pillows that are made of a hybrid fill.

We also loved the cover of the pillow – it feels extremely soft and luxe and does not irritate your skin. We didn’t even have to use another pillowcase when we slept on it It’s a bit newer on the market, but in our testing, we found it to be the most comfortable and the coolest (which is typically the complaint with memory foam pillows).

But don’t just take our own word for it. You can even check out the Dosaze pillow reviews on the site itself, if you don’t believe us.

You’ll also see that this pillow is a lot more reasonably priced than a lot of the pillows on this list – it’s a much better value than those other pillows and we found it actually be much more comfortable than pillows that are 2x or even 3x the price.

Don’t be fooled by the low number of reviews for this pillow – it is hands down the best one we slept on and is new on the market in 2021.

2) Sleep Number DownComfort Pillow, $199.99

5) Layla Kapok Pillow – $99

This pillow has solid reviews, and the copper infused Kapok material claims to keep you cool throughout the night. In practice, it is a bit hit or miss. While the pillow definitely is not any warmer than most pillows, it is hard to tell whether it truly keeps you cool at night – just look at the reviews:

That being said, overall it does have nice reviews and is touted as a nice pillow. It could be worth trying as it claims to have a plush feel (from the Kapok fiber) while maintaining the support of memory foam.

Dimensions: 18 x 26 inches

This is one of the slimmest pillows around and it’s great for stomach sleepers, particularly those who like to sleep with their arms under the pillow.

Now, don’t worry about exposing this pillow to different conditions. Its fill is made from latex memory foam that’s designed to resist mildew.

Pros:

  • Slim and light
  • Features 100% cotton cover
  • Mildew-resistant

Cons:

  • Can’t be machine washed
  • Not for people with latex allergy
  • Very thin, so definitely best for stomach sleepers

Pros:

  • Classic, contour, and ultimate shape options

Cons:

  • If you like to change up your sleeping position daily, it’s important to remember that the contour option won’t work great for slide sleepers.
