The flower originates from Mexico and it is quite easy to grow. The plant requires rather dry, well-draining soil and lots of sun. Chocolate Cosmos can be grown outside or inside, in containers during the wintertime, when the temperature tends to drop.

Be careful with the frequency you water the plant, ideally, you should water it once per week and make sure to let the soil dry in-between the waterings, as too much water can make its roots rot. Don’t forget that Chocolate Cosmos originally came from dry areas.

Chocolate Cosmos is quite unique in its nature as well. As it is a perennial plant, you will not have to worry about replacing it every year. For those that are unfamiliar with the term “perennial”, let’s see quickly what it really means.

Basically, we have “annual” and “perennial” plants, what is the difference between them?

Annual are all the plants that die after one season, even their seeds. This means that you will need to replant them every year if you want to have them as a permanent feature in your garden.

On the contrary, the Perennial plants are cold-hardy plants that will grow again alone after a year, and they usually bloom only for one season each year, for example only in the spring.

The life span of Perennial plants isn’t “eternal”, they usually tend to live around three to five years.

Another interesting fact about Chocolate Cosmos is that it doesn’t throw fertile seeds, so the only way to cultivate it would be by its roots! So, you will need to be careful with its roots if you decide to move or propagate it.
