Living off-grid always holds a peaceful promise.
Who wouldn’t want to settle away from the dizzying hustle and bustle of the city where your life is dictated by the rhythm of commute schedules and working hours?
Sure, it can be daunting. It can also be expensive. But for this family who left everything behind, it’s just a matter of getting over the first step.
Meet Erin and Josh Myers.
They’re both professionals – an electrician and a teacher. But when they decided they had enough of the city, they uprooted their lifestyles and cramped it in a 270-foot camper.
With this move, they carried with them a dream – to settle away from the city debt-free.

Hard work ahead
With only their kids, a 73-acre plot in West Virginia, and each other, they had a big work ahead of them.

To minimize their construction expenses, they opted to build an A-frame house which was relatively simpler to put up.
They also opted not to hire contractors.
Instead, they pulled their skills together and build the house with just two pairs of hands. After two years, they moved into a house they could definitely be proud of.
In a video posted on their YouTube channel, the Myers took their viewers on a tour inside their house.
What started from a 270-foot camper became a 1000 square-foot house that contains everything they need. It was definitely a house made of dreams.
Their own little paradise
The house is situated in the pasture field that’s surrounded by a 60-acre mixed woodland.
It gives their kids plenty of space to play in, streams to dip their feet in, and an unadulterated view that people in the city would pay for to see.
The whole house is anchored on the idea of self-reliance. Not only is the house “self-built”, but it’s also equipped with systems that allow them to live off-grid.
While the couple admitted that the house is still practically under construction, they have already completed the amenities that enabled them to live there comfortably.
First, they tour the main area.
The first thing you’ll notice is a wall made of glass windows. It gives everyone in the house a fantastic view of the woodlands and the mountains, and lets in a healthy amount of natural light.
The main area has an open floor plan. It combines the living room, kitchen, and dining room into one area.
The couple stuck with wood accents and earthy colors to match the house to its surroundings while making it cozier. Future additions will include a mud-house where they can store shoes.
Next, they showed the kitchen area.
Besides the wood stove that heats the house, they have a complete gas range that’s very efficient with fuel.
Their quartzite countertops also give their surfaces a luxurious marble look without breaking their budget.
At the back of the house, they also built a pantry area with ceiling-to-floor cabinets. With a lot of storage space, they can efficiently store important things one wouldn’t want outside like towels, bed covers, and blankets.
The bedrooms are temporary, as they said.
For one, the master bedroom functions as a laundry room and office.
Their daughter’s bedroom, meanwhile, is just “next” to theirs but they clarified that she will be having her own room with its own bathroom.
On the loft just above the kitchen area is the boys’ temporary bedroom.
The couple shared that it’s meant to be a bonus room where they could all hang out but for now it has two beds on either side.
While the house already looks amazing, the couple shared that there’s still a lot of work to be done.
Their next steps will include building the bedroom wing, stoning the foundations, and installation of the deck.
