Buying a home can be a daunting process. What is your dream house? What is your budget? Is there any way to blend the two for a fiscally responsible and beautiful home?
The thought might be an impossible dream – but for the Dangers, anything is possible.
Bryan and Jen Danger moved from their three-year home in Portland, Oregon to follow Jen’s job to British, Columbia. From there, they embarked on a year-long road trip moving south through Mexico and Central America.
Upon their return, they created a modern, contemporary home – all built by Bryan’s own hands. See for yourself in this exclusive house tour.
First, the lengthy driveway leads to a warm, “homey” entrance.
Upon stepping inside, the spacious wooden kitchen greets you, featuring metal countertops and a steel refrigerator.
Bryan Danger taught himself how to weld for these kitchen pieces, including a custom wine holder as seen below.
Next, you are led from the kitchen to the living room, with a comfortable couch and plenty of space to socialize.
Need to do a quick clean for guests? The Dangers have that covered, with another custom-made storage space for easy, organizational needs as well as a tucked away washing machine and dryer.
Even a pit stop to the porcelain throne after a morning cup of coffee is an aesthetic adventure.
There is plenty of natural light too, so no need to worry about racking up the electricity bill.
And after a long day, it certainly doesn’t hurt to enjoy a glass of wine in the warm, relaxing sunshine in your front yard.
Altogether, the home is a cozy paradise! But what could the mortgage cost be for this chic, contemporary home?
The answer? Much less than you’d think, considering their home is their garage.
So how did the Dangers end up moving into their own garage? According to Bryan, “When we got back [from our yearlong road trip], we realized we wanted to be here a significant portion of the year but we couldn’t afford our mortgage, so we talked through the options. The garage became an ‘aha’ moment.”
And what an “aha” moment indeed. There is plenty of space for the two to live comfortably, and their dog doesn’t seem to mind either!
As for the rest of the space in their 3-bedroom home, the couple rents the rooms to another family. It is a happy compromise for all!
The Dangers’ home is so stylish that their friends and neighbors often approach them asking what they are serving, assuming their living arrangement is actually a bar. But the two don’t seem to mind, instead welcoming their guests and maintaining a great space for socializing.
So the next time you find yourself in times of financial troubles and need to subsidize your expenses, consider moving into your garage. And if your friends and family question your decision, show them this article. After all, the Dangers show us that living comfortably in chic style at a reasonable rate is all possible if you put your mind to it.
And in the end, there’s no place like home!
