This is a great project if you do a lot of outdoor entertaining or your kids have school supplies in need of organizing. This DIY Cutlery Holder is a great way to recycle old tin cans into something super useful that looks awesome. Fill the cans with forks, knives, and spoons for a family BBQ or use them to hold school supplies (like scissors, pencils, pens, and crayons).

Materials

• 6 tin cans with labels removed
• Enamel paint
• Paintbrush
• 1 large nail
• 1 small nail
• 3/4″ screws
• leather strap
• screwdriver
• 1″ thick timber
• metal file
• 2 blocks of wood

Directions

1. Wash and dry your tins cans. Make sure to remove any labels.
2. File down the rough edges of the inside of the cans (you don’t want to cut yourself on any sharp edges!).
3. Paint the tins in your choice of color(s). Let dry.
4. Paint your piece of wood timber the same color as the cans. Allow for the paint to dry.
5. Puncture 3 tins with a nail about 1" down from the top and the other 3 about 1 1/4 inch from the top.
6. Place a tin at one edge of the painted wood and mark a spot through the puncture hole with a pen.
7. Place the small nail on the mark made by the pen and tap with a hammer to make a hole about 1/4″ inch deep. Then screw the tin in place.
8. Repeat the process for all 5 remaining tins. Make sure that the puncture hole in the tin on the opposite side of the timber is at a different height.
9. Finally, attach the leather strap or handle to the top of the block of timber.
