Pillows are something you might not think to wash very often. It’s icky, but it’s true. And as time goes on, you may wonder if there’s still any point of washing them. After all, white pillows are unfortunately one of those things that really show their age. After a certain point in time, they turn yellow — and it seems like they stay that way permanently.
But Jillee of One Good Thing By Jillee has swooped in to save your pillows and make sure you never have to toss them again.
“It’s just a reality of life: over time sweat and natural oils from your body will seep into your pillow while you sleep, attracting dust, dirt, and other nasty elements,” she writes. “However, that doesn’t change the fact that discolored and yellowed pillows are not very attractive!”
She set out to find a way to save her pillows and pillowcases so that she didn’t have to waste them.
“A few years ago. I was mourning the state of our pillows and had accepted that I probably needed to go out and buy some new ones. But I thought I may as well see if I could find any info online about washing pillows before I chucked them in the trash.”
What she found was an easy home solution that works like a charm.
You don’t have to waste any more money on new pillows, which isn’t just better for your wallet, but also better for the environment.
So, what’s this magical pillow-whitening potion that’ll save your pillows?
The best part of Jillee’s method is that it doesn’t require any special ingredients. You can just use the cleaning supplies that you have at home.
You’ll need a cup of Borax, a cup of powdered dishwashing detergent, a cup of powdered laundry detergent, and a cup of bleach. That’s it — no unusual chemicals or special ingredients. You probably have some of these things at home right now.
There are a couple of steps to this process, but they are all worth it.
First, you’ll need to run the pillows through on a hot water cycle, making sure you let them soak for a good long while. If you don’t have a soak function on your washer, you can still do this in your bathtub or even in a big pot on your stovetop.
If you decide to do it on the stovetop, bring the water to a rolling boil. Then add the two detergents and the Borax, letting them dissolve. When the powder has dissolved, pour the mixture over the pillows, making sure they get completely soaked. Then let them sit for about 30 minutes.
After they’re done soaking, run them through a regular wash cycle on your machine.
Make sure to rinse thoroughly. Then, run them through the fluff cycle to get them completely dry — and enjoy your sparkling white pillows once again!
