One of the best things about having the opportunity to purchase property is the creative freedom that comes with it.
Whether it’s a small, charming house surrounded by nature or something grander in a busy city, how you fix it up reflects your taste and personality and sets the overall vibe for the place.
You get to decide how each room is used, what color palette works best, and which decorative accents will serve as the perfect finishing touches.
Greg Hatton and his partner, Katie Marx, didn’t pick just any house.
They had their eyes on an old factory in Newstead, Victoria.
The historic building used to be home to the biggest dairy producer in the area – the primary source of butter and cheese for the residents of Newstead.
Imagine having a home that comes with quite a story!
Their friends and family must never get tired of hearing about it.
It was constructed in 1904, and the couple was completely taken by its charm.
More than the rich history that came with it, it was rustic and sweet and, for them, was the perfect place to settle with their children.
Greg and Katie couldn’t ignore the potential they saw in the old building.
The couple began transforming it according to their vision.
It wasn’t just a home, either. They maximized the building’s capacity by using certain areas for events and their two small businesses.
Of course, they had to make sure everything was child-friendly for their two daughters.
Despite the makeover, Greg and Katie preserved most of the original structure.
For instance, the furnace that used to produce butter and cheese now serves as an oven, and the sump tank is now a pool.
Nothing was overlooked – even the kids’ rooms had restored elements from the old building.
Looking at the rooms, one would never think it used to be part of an old factory.
The couple took on quite a practical approach, too.
They used as many of the original materials as they could and made improvements through restoration.
A few pieces were reworked and transformed into functional pieces too, such as stones made into bench tops, and wooden beams repainted and kept intact for their daughters’ rooms.
The place is well-loved by many, too.
It’s a venue for weddings, photo shoots, and even concerts.
In fact, it’s become so popular that the couple had to set a limit to the number of wedding bookings they accept in a year!
One can only imagine how delightful the event photos must be.
It’s the perfect place for the couple and their children.
Greg and Katie can run their businesses smoothly (furniture making and floristry) while spending time with their daughters.
What an ideal setup! They definitely picked the perfect place to turn into their new home: charming, spacious, functional, and boasting a rich and charming history.
