Many people have a preference for contemporary, modern architecture and design. Others prefer something more vintage and classic. But, what if you simply just cannot decide? Well – why not opt for a bit of both?
A Brisbane, Australia family purchased a church, originally built in 1924, to renovate and transform into their new home. However, renovating the church wasn’t the only part of their grandiose plan.
The heritage listed “Church of Transfiguration” was absolutely stunning on its own, but the new owners wanted to upgrade and modernize their new unique home without compromising any of the church’s history or integrity. They enlisted DAHA Architecture to help make their dreams become a reality.
In addition to a large amount of space in the church, a 2-story extension was added to the property, making the home a total of around 6,500-square-feet.
Gorgeous dark zinc was used to connect the historic church and the new, expansive addition. The classic-meets-modern home boasts a tunnel that links the two sections together.
Walking inside the modern extension, you enter a large entryway with seating and reading area.
As to be expected, the clean and modern interior of the home beautifully matches the contemporary exterior of the addition. Large windows can be found throughout the entire house which let in an abundance of natural light.
A large media room features a comfy wrap-around sofa where you can relax, watch a movie, and look out to the backyard.
The family made sure to make plenty of room for entertaining, and despite the extension’s size, the home is still quite cozy.
For more formal entertaining, you’ll find the dining and living area located near the sleek, elegant kitchen.
The white walls beautifully contrast with the dark wood, brick, and decor elements in the room. Furnishings were kept a neutral gray which works perfectly with the industrial-feel of the home.
The kitchen is luxurious and fit for a gourmet chef.
Dark brick and concrete countertops are the main details found in this kitchen. The stained, grained wood cabinetry is absolutely stunning and gives a bit of a natural element to the room.
The dining room sits in front of a large picture frame window under three metal pendant lights.
The long dining table can fit over 8 guests while looking over the beautiful cityscape. A steel and wood staircase sits at the end of the hallway that leads guests to the second floor.
One of the homes three bathrooms features a subway-tiled walk-in shower and large soaking tub.
The black and white color scheme continues into the bathroom using dark marble countertops and speckled flooring. There are also beautiful touches of wood elements as well, creating a perfect blend of organic and contemporary.
Although the new extension is impressive, it’s the church portion of the home that is truly remarkable.
Inside the 1924 church, there is a whiskey bar, kitchenette, pool table, and entertainment area. Up above, the loft space has been converted into a home office. Original stained glass windows can be found along the length of both sides of the church walls.
As an active family, it was important to make sure that recreation was available on the property grounds.
The church-conversion-home boasts a basketball court, tennis court, and large swimming pool with breathtaking views.
An aerial view of the property’s floorplan shows just how much planning and thought went into the layout.
