Goose taps on police officer’s car and asks for help
Officer Givens was surprised when a goose pecked on his car. He thought she needed food. But she needed something else.

There are many ways to describe the characteristics and behavior of geese. They’re faithful, and they adapt to humans quickly.

Another great characteristic they have is that they’re compassionate. When one of them is down, they will stay to support or look for help.

That’s what this goose did in Cincinnati, Ohio.

She found a car and started pecking at the door. It turns out she chose a police car to approach.

At first, the police officers thought she wanted some food so they tried to feed her. But that’s not what she wanted from them.

“I threw some food out for her, but she didn’t take it. She just kept pecking and quacking. Then she walked away, stopped and looked back. Then came over again and pecked some more,” Officer James Givens recalled.

The goose walked away and looked back at them as if to say, ‘Follow me.’

Now curious, he decided to follow her, and that’s when he understood what she was trying to tell him. One of her babies got tangled up in a balloon string and couldn’t get out. Of course, none of them had sharp teeth that they could use to gnaw the duckling free.

And most likely because of her maternal instinct, the mother goose looked for humans who could help them.

Because he wasn’t sure how to approach the goose and her baby, Officer Givens decided to radio the local SPCA to help them. Unfortunately, there were no wildlife rescuers available at that moment.

Fortunately for him, his colleague, Officer Cecilia Charron, heard his call and drove over to help him.

“She showed up on her own,” Officer Givens said. “I told her to be careful, but she just walked over and untangled the baby. The mother goose just watched, like she knew. It was amazing.”

He said maybe the mother goose sensed that Officer Charron was a mother herself. And she somehow knew her baby was in good hands.

It took Officer Charron a few minutes to untangle the baby while her mother waited patiently by their side.

At last, she was able to remove the string and free the baby. The baby rejoined her family and swam away freely.

If they hadn’t captured the entire scene on video, it would have felt like a made-up story.

“It seems like something made up. It was just incredible,” Officer Givens added. “I honestly don’t know why I decided to follow her, but I did. It makes me wonder – do they know to turn to humans when they need help?”

He also added that in her 24 years in the police force, Officer Charron said this was the highlight of her career, while she wiped away her tears.

Officer Givens hopes that posting this video online, it’ll inspire other people to be kinder and more compassionate.

“I don’t know what it all means,” Officer Givens said. “But I hope it might inspire more compassion in other people.”
