Eating fruits that are abundant in water is best during summertime. It doesn’t only replenish lost fluids in our body but also keeps us away from health complications brought by dehydration.

Thankfully, the world is blessed with watery fruits, especially in tropical countries.

One of the best rehydrating fruits is cucumber.

Fruits like cucumbers are best when freshly picked, wouldn’t you agree?

However, you may have been growing them for quite a while now but if you’re not growing them vertically, then you’ve been doing it wrong all this time.

Do you keep on running out of space in your backyard or farm? Do you always see wasted cucumbers underneath its leaves? Consider yourself lucky because you’ve come to the right place.

Thanks to DIY Everywhere for these tips that we can use moving forward in growing our cucumbers.

1. Pick a sunny location

Your cucumbers love the sunlight so you better give them the best spot where it is abundant. It is also better to plant them outdoors because cucumbers hate enclosed areas and the cold weather.

2. Let them grow “UP”

To grow cucumbers vertically, you must let them grow vertically. That simply means you need to give them something to crawl on like a trellis since cucumber is a vine crop. Cucumber grows fast and they require plenty of space for that.

According to Urban Organic Gardner, a full-grown cucumber can take up to as much as 20 feet of land. However, growing them vertically will save you a lot of space. You may also use a tomato cage if you don’t have trellis available as an available option.

3. Grow cucumbers in a container

This applies to people who don’t have enough land space for growing cucumbers. If you have empty containers that are large and sturdy enough to hold its plant, then feel free to use them. If you choose to do this method, make sure to put a post to your chosen container so its vines have something to crawl on.

4. Give your cucumbers a strong support

It’s the same logic as giving them a trellis or tomato cages. When cucumbers grow its fruits, it obviously becomes heavy, so they must have sturdy support. Pick something strong enough to hold them upright.

5. Plenty of water

Just like humans, plants also need to drink water. Cucumbers, in particular, need to be watered a lot and regularly. This will not just give them enough nutrients but it will also protect their flavor.

6. Look underneath the leaves

If you are taking note of the number of fruits your cucumber has, then make it a habit to look under those leaves. Most people miss this part and end up losing a couple of fruits after harvest. You don’t want that happening to you, do you?

Taking care of your cucumbers is also taking care of your health.
