Creating your own personal space is all about customization. The possibilities are endless when you think about how to adjust the area to fit your lifestyle.
Most people nowadays prefer to live in a bigger, more spacious housing since it’s more comfortable to have the breathing room. For others, like Chrisitan Schallert, being minimal is a life decision that doesn’t seem to bother in the slightest. Christian decided to do something about his apartment in order to fit his simplistic needs. The renovations were huge, but the outcome was a major improvement from how it used to look.
“My mother was like, ‘Oh my God Christian what did you do we’re still not there yet,’ he explains after she climbed a hundred steps to his fifth floor apartment. “Then we entered the apartment it looked completely different. It looked really dark. “There was an old matches in my mom was like, ‘This is crazy Christian what are you going to do with it.'”
Christian realized he would need some assistance, so he had an architect by the name of Barbara Appolloni come in to help in creating and designing adequate space.
Christian was inspired by space-saving furniture on boats and small, Japanese homes. His vision was to maintain the functionality and efficiency of living regardless of reducing living space.
It’s actually something you come in and you don’t realize what’s all hidden in the wall, “Christian said. “It’s full of surprises.” The wooden panel constructed on the wall acts as a cover for a sink, stove, microwave, refrigerator, freezer, dishwasher, and cabinetry what he can store food as well as kitchenware.
The storage space for his clothes and shoes are located to the right of his kitchen. Christian is able to shower in a glass cube which acts as his standalone shower. In addition, the bathroom is tucked away and it’s about the size of a closet, however, it fits a toilet perfectly and even has shelves for magazines to satisfy your reading pleasure.
His couch also acts as a pull-out bed and rolls from underneath the balcony. His nightstands also function as steps that lead to the balcony and the television can be turned out from the wall. “It’s like a Legos for adults,” said one of Christian’s friends.
According to Schallert, he’s had up to 40 people in his apartment at once!
The space is incredibly efficient considering its limitations. You can even pull out a plank that is propped up onto a flower stand and acts as a dining table.
Schallert calls his apartment his “action home” since he’s always moving things around. Surprisingly, it doesn’t bother him at all since he gets to be creative and also get good exercise.
“I thought I can definitely live in something like this,” he says. “At the end of the day, what do you need for living? You need a nice comfortable mattress, nice clean sheets, running water, a shower, and a stove to cook something. That’s actually what you need, you don’t need much more stuff.”
Well, we don’t think we can argue with that logic. Christian has surprised his family and friends by settling down into a more reduced living space. It’s not something that most people would consider when looking at their next living space, but he definitely makes it work as best as he can.
By following through with his decision, Christian has also reduced his carbon footprint on the Earth, thus being more aware of his environment as well as taking a proactive stance to help counter excess waste. He certainly seems very happy with the decision he’s made.
