You can argue with me if you want to, but pizza is hands down one of the best foods on the planet. Need proof? There are stats!
In fact, a survey, with 2,027 U.S. adults, asking what their favorite food was and pizza came out as the strong winner. What is amazing about pizza is that there are so many different kinds. It is almost as if there is a pizza that could be made for anyone or you can like all of them.
One new way to mix up your pizza selection is by making pizza bites!
I am not talking about Totino’s Pizza Rolls, I am talking about homemade pizza bites made in an ice tray. Don’t worry they will not be cold pizza bites unless you like cold pizza! Not only are these pizza rolls easy, but every person can customize each individual pizza bite to their liking.
If you want to mix it up, you can make a variety of pizza bite flavors like the video does.
What you will need to start is:
- Ice Cube Tray
- 16 ounces of pizza dough
- Sauce of your choosing: marinara, alfredo, BBQ, etc.
- Shredded cheese of your choosing: mozzarella, cheddar, provolone, etc.
- Toppings of your choosing: pepperoni, chicken, chopped veggies, pineapple, etc.
- Oven
Once you have chosen what kind of pizza bites you want to make it is time to get your ice cube tray and pizza dough out. The pizza dough needs to be cut in half, as there will a bottom and top layer for the bites. The recipe states,
“On a floured surface, take one half of the dough and roll it out into a rectangle, about ⅛ of an inch thick. Repeat with other half of dough and set aside.”
As you can see in the picture above, you will need to form the dough into each ice cube square on the tray. Make sure not to make a hole in your dough because you definitely do not want any of the good yummy stuff falling out of the bites later! You want all the toppings and sauce to stay right inside the bite so you can enjoy every last bite.
Once that is finished it is on to the fun part, putting the pizza bites together.
The sauce will be put in first at the bottom of each square. How much sauce you put in depends on how saucy you like your pizza. Following the sauce, it is time to put in your cheese.
Maybe you are just a cheese pizza person and that is all you want, perfect. For everyone else, it is time to put on your toppings.
Once you have created 12 perfect pizza bites to your liking, it is time to cover the ice cube pizza bites with the last half of the pizza dough. The recipe states,
“Cover the prepared bites with remaining dough and roll over the ice cube tray with rolling pin to seal. Trim any excess dough and save for more pizza bites.”
The pizza bites will need to freeze for one hour, so make sure to give yourself enough time to prepare the pizza bites.
When it is getting close to the hour mark, preheat your oven to 350ºF/180ºC. Once the bites have been put in the freezer for one hour it is time to flip the tray onto a baking sheet. The video has parchment paper on their baking sheet, or you can use a cooking oil spray.
While being careful not to damage the bites, you will loosen each bite to get out of the tray. Then you will cut and separate each bite before putting the pizza bites in the oven.
Bake the pizza bites for 15-20 minutes. You will want the pizza dough to have a golden-brown color. Then, viola, delicious pizza bites! You can dip them in sauce and serve like an appetizer or have them for a meal. Either way, you can never go wrong with pizza bites.
