What if you had to live in a shipping container in the middle of the desert?
Doesn’t sound like too much fun, does it? Well, you may be wrong. London-based architect James Whitaker recently came up with a design for a home comprised entirely of shipping containers.
You’re probably imagining a small, cramped, windowless room that gets boiling hot in the desert sun. But Whitaker is more creative than that. He designed a house that is unique and beautiful. While it may not be every person’s style, nobody would mind staying in this place for a few days. Not only does the outside of the building look really cool – the interior is just as beautiful.
The inside of the residence is spacious and oddly shaped.

The house is 200 square meters and features all the essentials you’d ever need.
There is a living room, a kitchen, and three bedrooms. Several shipping containers have been put together at different angles to create a kind of blooming alien look. The bottom containers make up the actual rooms, while the ones set at more vertical angles provide much-needed space and light in the building. This effect makes the inside of the house appear even larger than it already is.
Outside of the house will be a neutral-colored deck that does a great job of bringing the outside in and provides a pleasant area for enjoying the outdoors.
The plans for this structure came to be when one of Whitaker’s clients and some friends took a trip to a plot of land in Joshua Tree, California. While they were there, one of the client’s friends claimed to know of a building that would look great in the area. That building turned out to be one of Whitaker’s designs.
The friend had seen the photo on the internet and was inspired by it. And once everyone saw how amazing the structure would look on that particular plot of land, they agreed that it just had to go there.
While the building was originally designed to be an office space, Whitaker’s client starting imagining it as a possible home for another client. And since the office space plans had never gone through, there was no reason not to continue with the same design on a brand-new project. He knew it would be a hit. Therefore, he contacted Whitaker, and the next time the client was in London, they started making arrangements for planning this amazing building. It really seems like it was just meant to be.
The home is entitled the Joshua Tree Residence.
While it has not yet been built, it is expected that construction will begin next year. Soon after that, the house will be ready to live in. Apparently, it is being constructed for an unnamed movie producer. However, there are several claims that the producer in question has a passion for creativity, so it’s clear that this home will be perfect for him or her. Just don’t get too jealous that you can’t live here!
When everything is complete, the Joshua Tree Residence will provide beautiful views of the desert scenery, which will be beautiful to look out on every day.
It will be set on a 90-acre plot of land, so you would never have to worry about neighbors bothering you here. The house will also run off of solar power that will come from the panels that will be placed on the roof. So not only is this home beautiful – it’s eco-friendly, as well. What’s not to love?
