We often go to stores like Sam’s Club and Costco because of the discounts and deals they offer. They are able to offer such great deals on foods and other goods because they sell in bulk. But there’s one small problem with buying in bulk, and that’s finishing the food in time before it spoils.
I don’t know about you, but my family and I have this problem all the time. We buy bulk packs of chicken, salmon, fruits, and vegetables thinking that we can finish it. However, everyday life gets in the way at times, and weeks later, we are forced to toss what we bought.
Fortunately, we have compiled a nifty list of tricks you can use to save your food from spoiling. Many of these ideas involve using your freezer, which can be a great asset!
Save Buttermilk
If you buy a carton of buttermilk, then be sure to save the rest after you open it. Use an ice cube try and fill it with servings of buttermilk. Use an ice cube whenever you need to use buttermilk in your favorite recipes.
Freeze Dollops Of Tomato Paste
Opening a can of tomato paste usually comes with the expectation of finishing the whole can upon opening. Avoid this situation by freezing the unused parts of the can. Line a tray with wax paper, and then drop dollops of paste onto the tray. Put the tray in the freezer.
Once the dollops are frozen, then transfer the pieces into a Ziplock bag.
Preserve Green Onions
Chop green onions and then freeze them in a plastic bottle to preserve their shelf life.
Quick and Easy Breakfast
Pancakes keep well in the freezer. Be sure to freeze them separately before putting them in a big. They don’t stick together if you do this.
Muffin Tin Soup
Freeze your leftover soup in a silicone muffin tin. This creates individual portions of soup that you can quickly heat up whenever you want to.
“Shred” Cheese
Shred cheese yourself in order to save money. Use a grater or a food processor to do this. Then, place all the shredded cheese in a freezer bag.

Puree Greens
Greens can go bad quickly, so prevent this by puree-ing them. Then freeze them to create delicious smoothie cubes that you can add to any drink you make.
Portion Ground Beef
Section off large amounts of ground beef and freeze it in individual bags.
Freeze Herbs With Olive Oil
Add olive oil and herbs to an ice cube tray to freeze them. Then, take a cube whenever you want to add flavor to a dish.
Freeze Eggs
Freeze fresh eggs in a silicone mold and freeze. Learn more about this here.
Freeze Avocados
Preserve avocados by freezing them. First, slice an avocado in half. Then, brush lime juice to help the fresh avocado retain its bright color.
You can also puree the avocado, and then place it in an ice cube tray to freeze. Then, thaw and use in your favorite sandwich.
Frozen Bananas
Brown bananas can be frozen to create a delicious, creamy ice cream. Slice the banana, freeze it, then puree it in a food processor. Add a touch of vanilla for added taste.
