Getting to throw your dishes into a machine and not having to wash them by hand is truly a beautiful thing. It’s very tempting just to toss everything in there so you don’t have to hand wash it but that’s not a very good idea if you want your dishwasher to last.
Not only can you destroy your dishwasher but you can damage whatever it is your putting into the dishwasher.
So, here are things you’ll want to make sure that you don’t put in your dishwasher:
Nonstick Pots and Pans
Putting these items in the dishwasher will remove the nonstick coating. Make sure the manufacturer says that these are dishwasher safe before you pop them in.
Crystalware
Putting your gorgeous crystal pieces in your dishwater is risky. The high temperatures can cause it to chip, crack, or dull. If you have crystal that claims to be dishwasher safe just make sure that it secure inside and can’t shake or rattle around.
Items with Metallic or Handpainted Decorations
The decorations can chip away or rub off if put in the dishwasher. It’s best to handwash these items.
Cast-Iron
Cast-iron skillets should be seasoned before you use them and when you place them in the dishwasher you’re undoing all the seasoning that you’ve done. It’s best to just rinse these with warm water and rub it clean with some salt.
Printed Measuring Cups
After continual washing in the dishwasher, the detergent will wear off the printed measurements. So it’s best to handwash these as well.
Cookware with Burn Stains
The dishwasher will not get the job done and can set the stain. You’ll need some elbow grease and baking soda to get that glass these items clean.
Wooden Utensils
Your wooden utensils can lose their shape in the dishwasher, so you’ll want to clean by hand.
Copperware
That beautiful copper shine can dull when put in the dishwasher.
Vintage China
Most vintage pieces weren’t made to withstand detergent, high-pressure water jets, or high temperatures. Putting your vintage pieces in the dishwater can cause them to chip or wear away the paint.
Chef Knives
Putting fancy knives in the dishwasher can cause your blades to dull. It’s best to wash these by hand.
Garlic Press
There are lots of tiny spaces where sticky garlic can hide. You’ll have to handwash this in order to clean it properly.
Cheese Grater
The same goes for your cheese grater. There are too many spaces for cheese to hide and stick. You have to hand wash your cheese graters to make sure you dislodge all of the cheese.
Insulated Mug
Some of these types of mugs are dishwasher safe, however, some aren’t. Placing the non-dishwasher safe ones in the dishwasher can ruin the insulation.
Aluminum Cookware
You can discolor your aluminum cookware by putting it in the dishwasher.
Things With Labels on Them
Putting items that still have sticky labels on them in the dishwasher can cause those labels to come off and get stuck in the dishwasher filter and damage your machines.
