We all have mouthwash in our home to keep our breath minty fresh and our mouths healthy. But there are lots of ways you can put it to good use around your home. Since most mouthwash contains alcohol or hydrogen peroxide it can be used to clean and disinfect.
Here are 15 ways you can use mouthwash around your house:
1) Get Rid of Dandruff
If you have dandruff caused by an overgrowth of a yeast-like fungus called malassezia, you can use mouthwash to control its growth and get rid of dandruff. Mix equal parts of mouthwash and witch hazel along with 8 parts of water into a spray bottle. Spritz your scalp with it after washing your hair.
2) Soak Your Toothbrush
Your toothbrush cleans your teeth, so that means you need to clean your toothbrush from time to time. Pour some mouthwash into a cup and toss in your toothbrush so that your toothbrush head is fully submerged. Let your toothbrush sit overnight so that the mouthwash can work its disinfectant magic.
3) Treat Athlete’s Foot
You can ward off foot fungus by swabbing your feet with a cotton ball soaked in mouthwash. If you have a case of athlete’s foot, soak your feet in one part mouthwash and two parts of water to kill the bacteria and fungus on your feet.
4) Kill Armpit Smells
If you’re a little sweaty or smelly and don’t have time for a shower, you can dip a cotton ball in mouthwash and wipe your armpits down to freshen up.
5) Get Rid of Bruises
Rub some mouthwash on a bruise to reduce its appearance. The mouthwash will stimulate blood flow and heal your bruise.
6) Help Flowers Last
Pour a capful of mouthwash into your vase of freshly cut flowers to help extend their life. It will kill bacteria that cause your flowers to wilt quickly.
7) Facial Astringent
Out of facial astringent? You can use an alcohol-based, sugar-free mouthwash in a pinch.
8) Foot Soak
Want softer feet and relief from those cracked heels? Try a mouthwash soak. Mix a cup of Listerine, a cup of vinegar, and 2 cups of warm water and let your feet soak in it for 10 to 15 minutes. Use a foot file or pumice stone to scrub away the dead skin.
9) Glass Cleaner
If you’re out of glass cleaner, you can use some mouthwash on a damp cloth. It will work out in a pinch.
10) Clean Your Toilet
Pour 1 cup of mouthwash into your toilet bowl and let it sit for 30 minutes. Scrub with a brush and your toilet will be sparkling white and disinfected. You can use this on your bathroom sink too.
11) DIY Bug Spray
Not keen on spraying yourself with a chemical-filled bug spray? Pour mouthwash into a spray bottle and spritz yourself. You may have to reapply a few times but it’s better than those harsh chemicals. Just don’t use a whitening mouthwash because it may bleach your clothing.
12) Stop Itching
If you have an itchy bug bite or rash, try rubbing some mouthwash on it. The alcohol will dry it up and stop the irritation. Apply as needed.
13) Get Rid of Ants
Mix equal parts of mouthwash, hydrogen peroxide, and dish soap and spray it in areas where ants invade. Let the solution sit for 15 minutes and wipe up the remaining spray and ants.
14) Disinfect Clothes
If you don’t want to use bleach or other harsh chemicals on your clothing you can pour 1 cup of mouthwash in your load to get rid of bacteria. Use mouthwash without artificial coloring.
15) Get Rid of Washing Machine Stink
If your washing machine has a musty odor, you can pour in 1/2 cup of antiseptic mouthwash and run your machine without any clothes in it.
