Bangladesh is a country that borders India, and it is one of the poorest countries on earth. The average yearly salary for a person in Bangladesh in 2014 was $1,190. In addition to this, they suffer from a brutally hot climate.

In one village of Daulatdia, of the Rajbari district in Bangladesh — 28,000 people live without electricity in poorly constructed tin huts.

The average temperature in Bangladesh can reach up to 113 degrees Fahrenheit during the summer time — making their tin homes more like sweltering ovens. Their homes become completely unbearable to live in.

One incredibly simple idea, using items that are commonly found in the area, would change their lives completely.

A man named Grey Dhaka, who owns an advertising business in Bangladesh, came up with a brilliant and creative solution to help people stay cool during the intense summer temperatures. It’s the Eco-Cooler, a zero-electricity cooling system.

The concept for the ingenious contraption comes from something we can do with our own bodies.

Blow on your hand with your mouth open; it’s warm, right? Now, purse your lips and do the same thing. The air is much cooler!

This same concept is applied to Dhaka’s Eco-Cooler. Plastic bottles are cut in half and secured inside holes that have been cut equidistant to each other on some wood or cardboard. This piece of wood or cardboard is then placed inside a window.

The hot air passes through the wide opening of the cut bottle and forced into the tiny opening of the bottle where we drink. When the air is compressed, the air is cooled and brought into the house!

The partner in this project, Abdullah Al Mamun says he hopes this invention can help provide a bit of relief in their lives.

“Since most rural homes in Bangladesh are made of corrugated tin, the Eco-Cooler has the power to provide relief to millions of Bangladeshis. We sincerely hope this volunteer effort will make a difference in their lives.”

The incredible design uses recycled materials and cools the inside of their homes by 5 degrees Fahrenheit. Check out how it works in the video below.
