Livestock in your backyard is one of the ways to become self-efficient in terms of food supply.

Growing chickens is one option. They provide us with meat and eggs.

But for them to grow healthy, they need to be fed food rich with nutrients that they need to produce high-quality meat and more eggs.

The individual ingredients serve different necessities for our chickens to lay more good quality eggs.

We will be breaking down each of them and their benefits to the chicken.

It helps hens lay more eggs.

Let’s begin. First, prepare a box or a tote to fill in with the chicken feed mixture.

Tom uses a 30-gallon tote in the video.

The process will start with the largest volume ingredient to the least.

Whole Oats are the first in.

A 30-pound bag of oats is enough for the mixture.

These can be bought at any local farm and feed store and they provide a fair amount of protein to the chickens, along with other nutrients.

They also provide antioxidants.

Next up will be whole corn.

This ingredient is a great source for chickens, especially during the winter season.

It will keep their body nice and warm.

We’ll be adding 20 pounds of corn to the mixture.

Mix the ingredients as you add them.

Since there are oats and corn in the tote, we’ll mix them until they are incorporated.

This process will help you mix easily when the other ingredients are added in.

The next ingredient is called “BOSS”.

Also known as Black Oil Sunflower Seed.

Sunflower seed is also a great source of protein and makes their feathers shinier and more resistant to water.

Some people also believe that sunflower seeds are the key to higher egg production rates.

20 pounds of these will be enough. Mix it along with the others.

Split peas are the fourth ingredient.

This gives our chickens great vitamins and minerals for sustainable growth and production.

10 pounds of peas will be added to the mixture. Mix it well before adding the last ingredient.

Finally, we add flax seeds.

These are beneficial to our chickens since it gives them Omega-3 acids. They help improve eggs’ taste better as well.

Flax seeds are one of the top protein sources for your chicken feed. About 5 pounds should do it.

Tom also shared the protein percentage of other ingredients that you can use.

The highest one from the list is the Flax seed at 37%, Sun Flower Seeds at 26%, along with other items. So anyone can make their own mix to manipulate the protein content of their feeds.

The protein percentage we have for our mixture is 16.45%, which is just about the minimum requirement for chickens.

With this mixture, your chickens should be healthier and produce more eggs than normal.
